From Visual Design to Strategic Foresight at BITS Design School, Mumbai

There is a unique clarity that comes with stepping back into a university studio—not as a student, but as a facilitator.

Recently, I had the privilege of conducting a masterclass for the Year 2 cohort at BITS School of Design School, Mumbai, exploring how visual and graphic design evolve into Strategic Foresight and Futures Thinking.

Standing in front of the classroom, I was struck by how my own journey was coming full circle.

Bridging Craft, Systems, and Global Contexts

My path in design has never been linear. Navigating two countries and two distinct cultural paradigms taught me that design is as much about context as it is about visual language.

Over the years, my work has spanned diverse ecosystems:

  • Elementary Education & Learning Systems: Bridging visual design with long-term futures thinking.

  • Urban & Social Innovation: Translating complex frameworks into tangible touchpoints across food retail, city planning, and university innovation hubs.

  • Entrepreneurship: Building visual and systemic solutions from the ground up.

In the masterclass, I shared how foundational graphic design tools—colour theory, composition, semiotics, and spatial hierarchy—are not separate from strategic foresight. Rather, visual design is the dynamic lens through which abstract futures are rendered visible and actionable.

The Workshop: Designing 2040 Futures Moodboards

Integrated with Visual Design course, we moved from theory to practice with an interactive workshopping series: Brand Moodboards for 2040.

We tasked the students with exploring how iconic brands might evolve two decades from now when driven by specific emotional directives:

  1. Hope — Shaadi.com (Reimagining digital trust, relationships and connections in automated futures)

  2. Ambition — ISRO (Visualizing space tech accessibility and national pride in 2040)

  3. Transition — Duolingo (Mapping fluid language, cognition, and seamless learning)

  4. Expression — Instagram (Exploring post-screen, multi-sensory self-expression)

  5. Freedom — Barbie (Deconstructing cultural tropes into fluid, empowering future archetypes)

  6. Power — Disney / Pixar (Prototyping future narrative power and immersive storytelling)

Looking Ahead: The Power of Cohort Energy

Having spent years as a student and practitioner across continents, I found it humbling and inspiring to watch these young designers connect macro-trends with nuanced visual storytelling. Their ability to synthesize signal scanning, cultural cues, and aesthetic direction into bold 2040 scenarios showed incredible depth of perspective.

Education is an iterative loop. As I prepare for the next series of workshops with the upcoming cohort, I carry forward the vibrant energy and fresh perspectives from BITS Design School.

The future of design is systemic, visual, and profoundly human—and it is in very good hands.
